5 Hobbies That Bring a Sense of Calm

5 Hobbies That Bring a Sense of Calm

As the year comes to a close and the holiday hustle and bustle is upon us, we often find ourselves seeking moments of calm. Relaxing hobbies can help us create these moments as they provide a sense of peace and inspire our creativity too! Below you’ll find a few of our favorite calming hobbies that are perfect to practice during the coziest time of year.

5 Hobbies That Bring a Sense of Calm

1. Baking

Who doesn’t want to indulge in a sweet treat? Finally try the recipe you’ve had bookmarked for years or reference your family cookbook to bake something special this season. The process of measuring, mixing, and patiently waiting for the timer to ring is known to be meditative.

2. Knitting

Like baking, knitting is known as a meditative practice. It’s the perfect activity to practice on an autumn evening, cup of tea by your side. The best part is that you can create a cozy garment or blanket for yourself or a friend!

3. Reading

Whether it’s revisiting a beloved novel (see our editors top recommendations here) or cozying up with an issue of Bella Grace, getting lost in stories is a wonderful escape! See below for our recent editions:

4. Puzzles

Puzzles are a calming way to stimulate your mind. Plus, they’re a fun game to play with friends and family during the holiday season.

5. Journaling

As you may already know, we’re big fans of journaling here at Bella Grace. There’s nothing like putting your thoughts on paper to clear your mind. We’re such big fans of journaling that we even created a publication dedicated to this practice. If you haven’t peeked inside Field Guide to Everyday Magic yet, you’ll love the prompts, worksheets, and pages of journaling space.

What is your favorite calming hobby?

I love reading, journaling, puzzling, and cooking as a way to feel calm and cozy. However, my hands down number one stress relieving hobby that instantly brings me calm is coloring. Whether it be with colored pencils, markers, or crayons, adult coloring books with their beautiful designs are my go-to relaxation therapy.

Knitting socks, baking cookies, reading a novel, or Bella Grace at bedtime, are my favorite things to do. But I also love to stroll through the woods with my dog Gracie. Sometimes it’s so quiet, and other times the birds are singing their favorite songs. All these activities bring me PEACE.

I discovered pottery a few years ago as one of the only ways I could clear my mind completely for a few hours. The focus required to center and lift the clay is meditative and so therapeutic! Even hand building, just taking a lump of clay and making pinch pots.

As a 57 year old woman, I have been journaling since age 23. I recently expanded my interest to include junk journaling. For the first time, I am working with ephemera and paint to spice up my current journal. I have never been into scrapbooking because I have limited family. However, I now relish the “scrapbooking” aisle at art supply stores!
