Embracing Longer Nights

Embracing Longer Nights

Every year, we turn our clocks back an hour, and, just like that, the sun now sets before many of us have even finished our workdays. For some, this is a part of the season they’d rather skip. Not everyone likes the shorter days, and it’s easy to long for summertime when the sun was up well after dinner.

But what if, this season, we looked at the earlier sunsets a bit differently? What if, instead of mourning the loss of our precious daylights, we turn our attention to all the things to look forward to in the longer nights?

Think of the welcoming glow as you pull into your driveway at the end of a long day and the comfort of changing into your pajamas a little earlier. Imagine the delight of the night stretched before you with nothing but a book to keep you company. Think of the way that candlelight can make a normal Tuesday evening feel extra special.

Longer nights encourage us to enjoy some of the things we overlook during the busier months. They give us a chance to find special little ways that make coming home especially wonderful and comforting.

This could be the season you finally make your way through that stack of books on your nightstand. It might be the time to explore that hobby you’ve been interested in or try that new soup recipe you’ve had saved for ages. Perhaps, it is the season when you turn off the TV, turn on some light music, and see how long you can stretch out the dark hours before you.

And while it’s tempting to spend these hours tucked away indoors, the darkness outside can also be beautiful. Take a short walk through your neighborhood and admire the glowing windows. Step outside to look at the stars. Sit on the porch wrapped in a blanket and listen to the sounds of the evening. Notice how familiar places take on a different personality after sunset.

And, of course, you don’t have to love everything about the time change. Who does? Some nights will still feel too long and some days we’ll wish for just another hour of sunshine. We can miss those extra hours of daylight while appreciating what the longer nights have to offer. Instead of counting down the days when the sun begins setting later again, we can find little things to look forward to right now. After all, a lovely evening doesn’t require a sunset at 8 p.m. Sometimes, all it takes is a blanket, a good book, and the pleasure of being home safe for the night.
