Love Letter to a Single Friend

Dear Lovely:

I’ve wanted to share something with you for some time now. I’ve been waiting for the right time … but I don’t know if that exists. So I’ll just speak to you now, as you’ve always done – with truth.

I know you’ve been waiting for your chance at love. I see that you’ve been patient, and I’ve witnessed your heartache with the pain of phrases like, “What if.” I want to honor the void you may be feeling that no one but you can understand with pointed singularity. And I’m sorry, that in this struggle at least, I cannot come.

I want you to know that I would sacrifice all my wishes for you; I want nothing less than protection for the heartbeat inside you that has remained so strong. But I NEED you to know that being single in this life is a far distance from being alone. And I think I’ve figured out why it’s not yet your time to find that one person who will someday require so much of you.

The world has a plan for your love story, but right now your heart belongs to us … your friends who depend on you more than we should. Your grace, your spirit, and charm are necessary to keeping darkness at bay for those of us who count on you to be our source of light. You are an integral part of too many lives to be sacrificed to only one other. And while that may seem selfish, I don’t know if you realize that you have a power and a magic all your own … and it INSPIRES.

Do you know, beautiful one, what a treasure you are? Because I do. You are more genuine and authentic than many people ever learn to be. And it has often left me feeling that in a world filled with generic models … you remain a true original … worth more than any set or copy. It is possible, you know, that fate has joined destiny to keep you belonging to no one just a bit longer, so that your spirit can belong to everyone a short time more.

Someday your heart will call another’s home – but until then, I want you to know you are already loved, and this world is incandescently blessed by the space your heart now shares.

Gratefully,

Yours
